CORGI stands for the Council of Registered Gas Installers. It was set up in 1970 to protect the general public from the danger of unsafe gas installations and work. CORGI engineers go though rigorous exams and training before they are able to work on gas, which have to be retaken every five years.
It is a legal requirement for anyone carrying out gas work in England to be Gas Safe registered. If you arrange to have any gas work done, check if the person carrying out the work is a member of the Gas Safe Register.
This can be done by telephoning Gas Safe Register on 0800 408 5500 or asking them for their Gas Safe ID card. It shows their picture and their Gas Safe registration number. On the back of the card is details of the categories they are allowed to work in.
Make sure your Engineer is Gas Safe registered as bad workmanship can result in injury or even death.
